Welcome to the website of University Career Services. The services described below are coordinated by University Career Services (UCS) and are designed to assist employers in meeting their human resource needs. Whether you are looking to hire part-time employees, internship candidates, new graduates, or experienced alumni, UCS is poised to help you identify the most qualified candidates in the most efficient and cost-effective ways possible. Thank you for considering University of Houston students and graduates for your position vacancies. JOBank is a web-based job posting and
referral service that will help you identify qualified candidates for
your position vacancies. You may submit your postings on-line or, if you
prefer, by fax/mail and we will enter them for you. Students/alumni with
the qualifications you specify will receive automatic e-mail notification
of your job posting, and, if they are interested, will be able to apply
directly to you on-line. Students may also browse the website and view
your job posting. Employers who are current users of the campus recruitment service
and/or who advertise in the UCS publication Career Visions may post jobs
to JOBank free of charge. All others are charged the regular $20 per posting
per 30-day posting period. The posting period may be extended for an additional
30 days at the option of the employer at no additional charge. JobScan is a free job posting service.
This service consists of a searchable database of hard-copy job postings,
electronically scanned, and available online to students and alumni. The
main differences compared with JOBank are: there is no e-mail notification
of candidates and candidates cannot apply on-line. The service is used
heavily, however, and is a good, no-cost alternative to JOBank. To post
in JobScan just fax, mail, or email your posistion announcement to the UCS using the
information below and we will scan it into the JobScan database. University of Houston 106 Student Service Center 1 Houston, Texas 77204 Fax: (713) 743-5111 E-Mail: jfborja@uh.edu Resume Search. This web-based service
enables employers to access directly the ResumeBank database for candidate
searches. The fee for this service is $20 per 10 resumes retrieved.Employers
who are current users of the campus recruitment service and/or who advertise
in the UCS publication Career Visions may use Resume Search free of charge.
If, after reviewing resume profiles, you decide that there are no candidates
that meet your requirements, you will not be charged. You may also provide
the relevant search criteria and UCS will conduct the search and forward
the resumes to you. A note regarding JOBank, JobScan and Resume Search: JOBank and JobScan reach the potentially larger audience as all UH students (32,000+) and registered alumni are eligible to access them. Resume searches may be more effective for targeting job candidates with specific skills and qualifications who are registered for job placement services (approximately 5000 UH students and alumni register for these services each year). Employers are invited to use any or all services to identify qualified job candidates. Campus Recruitment consists of on-campus interviews between employer representatives and UH degree candidates, internship candidates, and alumni. Employers may specify the degrees, majors, and graduation dates of the candidates they wish to interview. University Career Services (UCS) coordinates announcements of employer visits and the scheduling of interviews. Reservations should be made one semester in advance for selection of the best dates, although we will try to accommodate all requests. Generally, at least three to five weeks lead time is necessary for us to notify academic departments and student organizations of recruitment visits. After reservations are made, UCS sends the employer a confirmation and contacts the employer prior to the campus visit regarding the status of interview schedules. Employers may also check the status of their interview schedules via the internet. Unless otherwise requested, interviews are 30 minutes in length with 14 interviews per schedule per day. Multiple schedules and multiple interview days are invited. Interviews may be arranged via Pre-Selection (see below), open scheduling, or a combination of both. Campus recruitment is a free service. Employers are invited consult with members of the UCS staff concerning effective strategies for ensuring quality interview schedules. Pre-Selection Receptions: Employers may elect to sponsor receptions or information sessions prior to their interview dates. The purpose is to provide job candidates with information about the organization in advance of the first interview, thereby saving valuable interview time. It also provides an opportunity for the organization to evaluate candidates in an informal setting. Receptions are usually scheduled between 6 pm to 9 pm and generally last from one-to-two hours. Most receptions are scheduled the evening before a campus interview date. Refreshments such as sodas, cookies, pizza, horsd’oeuvres – may be provided. You may reserve a reception room at the University Center, University Hilton, or Melcher Hall (College of Business) at the same time you set up your interview date. The room sizes range from a capacity of 14 people to 800 people. To make arrangements for a room, audio/visual equipment, and/or food, contact one of the following offices on our campus: University Center (713) 743-5287
Also, with regard to advertising, UCS recommends several career-related publications that can be used effectively with campus recruitment to reach a broad cross-section of job candidates. Each student and alumnus participating in campus recruitment and/or attending certain career development workshops receives a copy of Career Visions. An ad in Career Visions is a highly effective means of communicating career information to prospective job candidates. The campus newspaper, the Daily Cougar, and the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ Job Choices are also recommended. Contact information for these publications is as follows: Career Visions The Daily Cougar Job Choices Sample copies of the above publications are available from UCS upon request. Please call (713) 743-5088. Internships are beneficial to the employer as a means to evaluate prospective career candidates. They are invaluable to students in that they provide career-related, hands-on-experience prior to graduation. UCS maintains resumes of internship candidates and can help you match your internship needs with student interests and qualifications. Most are paid internships and not-for-academic-credit. If you are considering setting up a new internship or wish to list your internship positions with us, feel free to consult with our Internship Coordinator: (713) 743-5092. College Work-Study Program. Some non-profit employers are eligible to hire students who have been awarded College Work-Study as part of their financial aid package. A portion of the student’s salary is paid by the Federal or State government to supplement their financial need for college. If your organization would like to be considered as a College Work-Study employer, please contact the office of Scholarships and Financial Aid at the University of Houston Main Campus. Please call (713) 743-9051. Alumni Career Services. UH alumni are eligible to utilize all of the career development services coordinated by UCS. Employers are invited to post career, experience-required positions for alumni via JOBank or to search the ResumeBank database for candidates with experience. For additional information regarding alumni career services, call (713) 743-5088. When you establish an account, your organization will receive communications from UCS regarding recruitment deadlines, career fairs, special announcements, and other information from UCS.
