Overview Of Services

Career Counseling. University Career Services (UCS) assists UH students and alumni develop, evaluate and implement their career plans. Make an appointment with a Career Counselor to:

· Discuss your choice of major/career
· Find out what you can do with a degree in your major
· Learn how to research different career fields/employers
· Gather information about salaries and find out how to evaluate job offers
· Develop a job search plan
· Have your resume critiqued
· Practice the latest interview techniques
· Find out what an Internship is, why you need one, and how to get one
· Learn how to work a career fair
· Participate in a “mock interview”
· Identify strengths and weaknesses, pinpoint interests and clarify values
· Learn about the importance of “networking” and how to accomplish it
· Find out how you can make yourself a more qualified job candidate
· Discuss what you can expect in an on-campus or second interview
· Learn how best to use the Internet in your job search
· Establish a credential file for application to graduate schools, or education/academic jobs
· Prepare for a graduate or professional school interview

Walk-in Hours: 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. & 2 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., Monday and Tuesday

                       9 a.m. – 11 a.m. & 2 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday

Website. Check out UCS’s full-service, interactive website at http://www.career.uh.edu. Submit your resume, search and apply for jobs on-line, schedule interviews, check out upcoming events and workshops, take a free vocational assessment, request an appointment with a career counselor and more!

On-Campus Recruiting. Employers interview students of all majors for internship and full-time, career-level positions on campus every fall and spring semester. You must attend a Campus Recruitment Workshop in order to participate in campus recruitment. Students should plan on participating in Campus Recruitment up to one full year prior to graduation.

UCAN. The University Career Advisory Network, UCAN, links UH students and alumni with volunteer advisors representing a wide variety of occupational fields and experience levels. Network advisors can help you discover what a career or job in a particular field is really like; what academic and experiential preparation is best for a given career; how people find jobs in certain career fields; what the best sources of job leads are; what a certain geographic area is like; and other useful career and job-search information. Vocational Assessments. Designed to help you identify your strengths and weaknesses, pinpoint your interests, and clarify your values, vocational assessments can help you identify possible career paths and majors. Both self-administered and counselor-assisted assessments are available at UCS. Talk to a counselor to see which assessment is right for you. A nominal fee may be charged.
Internship Program. Internships provide meaningful work experience related to your academic studies. They allow you to experience and evaluate a potential career while you are still in school. An internship can also help you develop professional references and contacts for future networking. Internships are available for all academic majors. Career Fairs. UCS participates in several career fairs each semester and is one of the sponsors of the annual Texas Job Fair. Additional information regarding career fairs on and off campus is available at UCS and on the UCS website.

Career Workshops. UCS facilitates workshops on topics including resume writing, interview techniques, internships, job search, and campus recruitment every week. Log onto www.career.uh.edu and click on “Events Calendar” on the top of the page for dates, times, and descriptions of workshops, or pick up a workshop schedule in the UCS lobby.

Mock Interviews. Career Counselors are available to help you prepare for your employment and graduate/professional school interviews. Mock interviews are one-on-one practice interviews designed to prepare you for the real thing. We recommend that you attend an Interview Techniques Workshop, or read the Interview Handout (available in the UCS lobby, or on the UCS website under “Handouts”) prior to scheduling an appointment for a mock interview.

Employer Seminars. Every semester, UCS sponsors seminars facilitated by employers who actively recruit on our campus. Past topics have included “How to Work a Career Fair,” “Negotiating the Job Offer,” “Resume Writing,” “The Internet Job Search,” “Networking,” “Interview IQ,” and more.

Career Planning Series. Career related handouts such as “Choosing a Major/Career,” “Successful Job Search Methods,” “The Resume,” “The Complete Guide to Information Interviewing & Networking,” “Guide to Finding Internships,” “Preparing for the Employment Interview,” and more, are available free of charge in the UCS lobby and on our website under “Handouts.”

Career Resource Library. Over 600 career development and job search books, directories, and videos are available on reserve at the front desk of UCS. Click here for a complete listing. Employer Literature and Job Descriptions are available in the Campus Recruitment Center, Room 156.

Alumni Services. UH alumni are eligible for all UCS career planning and job search services. A nominal fee may be charged. Click here for details

Presentations. Career Counselors are available to conduct workshops and presentations on all aspects of career planning and decision-making, including job search. If interested, contact a Career Counselor or Susan Hlavac at 713-743-5093.
